Hack Night This Thursday

Hello SoDA Members!

This Thursday, April 12th from 6:30p – 9:00p in BYAC 110 will be one of our final SoDA meetings for the semester. We will gather any final submissions for anyone who still would like to run for a given officer position and then hold elections to decide the future President, Vice President, Secretary, and Treasurer of SoDA. Following this, members are invited to share any projects they are currently working on, enjoy some Pizza, and talk casually.

SoDA Meeting: Embedded Scripting for Games

Hello, SoDA members!

Our upcoming meeting will be held this Thursday, March 29, 2012 from 6:30p to 9:30p in BYAC 110. Pizza will be provided.

Our guest speaker, Jeremy Wright, professor of the C++ Practicum and professional code writer will be discussing embedded scripting for video games.

We will be presenting in C++, how to use Flex, and Bison to parse a custom command language; Then we’ll show how to add this command interpreter to a basic game. We’ll have a simple SDL graphics layer, and manipulate C++ objects at runtime. It should be very interesting. We’ll post the code after the talk so students can download it, and use it in their own projects. I will be live coding the project (in vim… :-) ).

Hack Night Tonight

Alright! We know you’re all getting ready for Thanksgiving, Finals, and a whole bunch of other responsibilities, so tonight meeting will be a bit more relaxed. Rather than having a speaker come in, tonight will be a hack night where you can eat pizza (provided by SoDA), talk with friends, share your app prototypes, random YouTube videos, or whatever else you’d like on the projectors, and ask us (SoDA officers) for assistance on any kind of development related questions you might have.

We’d also like to begin gearing up for elections for our organization. Before the start of next semester, we would like to host an election to determine who the new officers of SoDA will be so that we can train them in the ways of a Jedi officer. If you feel that you would be suited to be an officer (President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer, etc) go ahead and shoot us an email at asusoda@gmail.com OR talk with us during tonight’s meeting.

When: TONIGHT (Wednesday, 11/23/2011 7:00PM – 9:00PM)
Where: BYAC110

Engineering Passport Event Today

The Engineering Passport event is TODAY and we would love to see you there to hang out with us, talk with new ASU students about
what our organization has to offer, and see what other Engineering organizations at ASU have to offer.

The event runs from 5 – 7 p.m. in front of PV Main (Officers should meet in the PV Main Lobby at 4:45PM) There will be food provided for students (probably pizza).

If you would like to park near PV Main, the Stadium Structure allows crossparking after 4 p.m. if you have an ASU parking pass. Otherwise, you’ll need to find your own pay parking.

Because of scheduled time of the event, we will not be hosting a meeting tonight (We will resume weekly meetings next week with a very cool speaker).

Be sure to come and say hi!

Do not adjust your computer monitors… This is only a test (A few at least)

This weeks SoDA meeting had tests, tests, and… Voting! Yay!

Remi Taylor from Dev Fu returned to us for a third time! (He must like the pizza) to talk to us all about program testing and different ways to save all the effort of going through your program to find errors.

Check Remi’s github for sample code used during the presentation

After the presentation, Travis put up a vote for SoDA Club Treasurer, and Webmaster. After a long, battle to the death (Okay, maybe not that long) the ultimate decision was Jesse Michael for Club Treasurer, and Patrick Traynor for Webmaster (That’s me!)

Travis also put up a vote for the topics that Remi will be lecturing next week, with the ultimate decision being Intro to VIM, a quick view on the popular text editor, and Virtualization, setting up virtual machines to run other OS’s like Ubuntu, Mac OS, Chrome OS, or any OS you could imagine.

Then, we finally broke up into our respected groups and worked on our projects.

Next meeting, we will be talking about VIM and Virtualization by Remi Taylor.
