There is a great deal of support coming our way from faculty, alumni and industry partners which we will discuss as the details unfold. For now, I will at least lay out a few of our plans and the more distant vision that we have for SoDA. All of the ideas are open for discussion/criticism. Most of these are still in the planning stages, so now’s the perfect time for some impactful input! Our Facebook page is linked at the end of this post, so please head on over there if you have anything you would like to say.

Short-term:

• Back to weekly meetings! We will work hard to provide weekly entertainment/brain-dumps from industry experts and local enthusiasts. Students are always welcome to present at meetings, so step forward if you have a topic you would like to discuss with us.
• Food/drinks provided by sponsors – free pizza is always good, let us know if you have other suggestions for nourishment
• Group projects with available mentorship

Events:

• Programming competition(s) – the WCS (Women in Computer Science) org does a great job hosting their programming competitions and we want to help support that, and potentially host more of them.
• Hackfests! What better way to knock out a fun side project than borrowing a few extra minds for an evening?
• LAN Parties similar to the one previously hosted by Microsoft.

Long-term:

• Hackerspace - Tempe is in desperate need of a community-operated hackerspace. We want to help ASU students get connected with local developers in an ongoing operation outside of SoDA meetings. Not very many groups or individuals are as well-connected with people in industry and on campus as this organization is. We want to take advantage of this position we have and help connect all of the dots.
  
• Community Connections – many students have a huge amount of talent and knowledge that they want to apply but they can’t think of a fun project to work on. We can work to connect them with people who have project ideas and are willing to hire/collaborate to see their visions come to life.

With the help of faculty, alumni and industry partnerships, SoDA will be back on its feet in no time. There is still much to be done. Stay tuned – we will be sending out updates over summer break.

This has been the last meeting for this semester. We wish you good luck with your finals and have a happy and relaxing summer! We’ll be in touch when SoDA resumes in Fall 2012

This Thursday, April 12th from 6:30p – 9:00p in BYAC 110 will be one of our final SoDA meetings for the semester. We will gather any final submissions for anyone who still would like to run for a given officer position and then hold elections to decide the future President, Vice President, Secretary, and Treasurer of SoDA. Following this, members are invited to share any projects they are currently working on, enjoy some Pizza, and talk casually.

Unfortunately, we will not be hosting a meeting tonight, however our next meeting will be hosted on April 12th, at which we will allow all those who have decided to run for officer positions to speak to the club about why they believe they are best suited for the position. After all candidates are finished, we will host the elections and decide who will be officers of SoDA for next semester.

The nine-week summer program will run from June 5 through August 3, 2012.  The application deadline is April 13, so prompt action is needed.  Students will gain hands-on experience in cognitive radios, wireless networking, and their applications; develop general research and teamwork skills; and cultivate and develop creative and independent thinking, self-confidence, team spirit, and an appreciation for the potential of interdisciplinary collaboration in creating new knowledge.  Program benefits include:

·         Stipend ($4,500 over 9 weeks)

·         Free on-campus housing

·         Travel allowance of up to $600
